In the collective imagination, a firm mattress is a guarantee of quality, the certainty of sleeping well and not experiencing sagging. But is it really the right choice? Will you sleep better on a firm mattress? In this article, we will explain the differences in firmness depending on each material and the advantages they offer, so you can choose the mattress that best suits you and who knows, maybe it will be soft!

1. The different types of firmness:

You'll have several types of firm mattresses to consider, as well as several degrees of firmness: from medium-firm, firm, to very firm. Spring mattresses, pocket spring mattresses, foam mattresses, memory foam mattresses, natural latex mattresses—there are many technologies available to you in your quest for firmness. How can you differentiate them?

Spring mattress or pocket spring mattress : this is a firm mattress model, very common, it offers excellent ventilation and support.

Soft foam mattress: Polyurethane foam provides the firm, progressive support your spine needs. A soft welcome with the support your back needs.

Memory foam mattress : adapts to the shape of each sleeper. This foam offers ideal comfort for sleepers, combining softness and firmness.

Natural latex mattress: provides firm, bouncy support, ideal for larger body types.

2. Which sleeper should I use a firm mattress for?

There are different levels of firmness (medium-firm, firm, very firm) which depend on the density level and quality of the filling, but also on the sleeper's morphology.

Your body shape, height, and weight will be important criteria for judging the firmness of a mattress. It is therefore essential to study the sleeper's build!

For polyurethane foam or memory foam mattresses , a small person with a slim build (less than 70 kg) will feel medium-firm to firm, while a large person with a heavy build will prefer a less soft mattress. For heavy sleepers, spring or natural latex mattresses, considered very firm, will be ideal for providing the support needed for their body shape.

A person of small build will therefore have more difficulty falling asleep on a spring or natural latex mattress which will be too firm.

3. Combine firmness and comfort

So now that you understand how to choose a firm mattress, we recommend a medium-firm mattress if you're looking for enveloping comfort, a deep sleep, and no pain when you wake up. In the Bdreams mattress range with a soft feel and support, we have the Osmoz , a clever blend of memory foam and polyurethane.
